Why I Recommend Using A Nicotine Patch To Help You Quit Smoking

There are two big reasons why cigarette smokers, who want to quit smoking, should use a nicotine patch or nicotine gum.

First of all, nicotine does not cause cancer.  You are addicted to the drug, nicotine, and not to the toxic smoke that contains it.

Secondly, using the patch or some other nicotine releasing tool will help you to “step down” and away from the act of smoking.  You can deal with the nicotine later.

Obviously, nicotine is a powerful drug.  It is more addictive than heroin or cocaine.  You have dosed yourself multiple times a day for X number of days and years.  As a result, your brain has actually built for your brain additional “pleasure receptors” to receive gratification from nicotine stimulated neurotransmitters.  In essence, the nicotine addict has compounded his or her ability to receive the affect of that drug, thereby increasing their addiction to it.

The good news is that these additional pleasure receptors will eventually be “dismantled” after you stop dosing yourself with the drug.  So then, the purpose of taking in nicotine from a source other than from cigarette smoke is to get you to transfer your association of nicotine satisfaction from SMOKE, to gum or patch.  You can then be in a position to scale back your doses gradually.

Think about it.  For years you have associated lighting up and enjoying the feeling of inhaling and exhaling the smoke from your cigarettes with dozens of your daily activities.  Now you find yourself with no cigarette between your fingers or your lips.  Now you don’t have that cigarette related activity, along with its sensations, anymore but you still do all the other daily activities you’ve always done.  You still drink your coffee, talk on the phone, etc.   Again, an alternative nicotine source (patch or gum) will take away ONE of your addictions pains.  Your drug cravings will be less.

Nicotine, although a very powerfully addictive drug, does not cause cancer.  And it is easier to decrease you daily nicotine dosage—and eventually quit it completely—when you use an alternative drug source other than lighting up less often.
