Want to Get Rid of Belly Fat? Find Out Why Refined Carbohydrates Are a Dietary Disaster
By John ArnastOf the many factors that contribute to gaining belly fat, there is one kind of food that is a dietary nightmare that you should be aware of. I’m not counting foods that are rich in fat. It’s common knowledge that the body doesn’t metabolize fatty foods very well.
As a
dieter, you no doubt know the fact that when you consume more calories than your body burns, eventually you will gain weight. What you may not know is that calories from some carbohydrates more readily end up as fat than others.
Carbohydrates represent calories. Calories represent stored energy for your body. But not all carbohydrates act the same. Some are “slow burning” and some are “rapid burning.” Rapid burning carbs quickly break down into sugar, causing your insulin level to spike. Sugar released from the slow burning carbs are released more slowly, and don’t cause that undesirable quick surge in your blood sugar level. Since your body doesn’t need so much energy all at once, excess calories that don’t get burned get stored as fat for future energy needs.
So what’s the difference? Why does it matter if your insulin level spikes quickly or rises gradually?
Short answer: When too much sugar is released into your bloodstream too quickly, the accompanying inrush of insulin initiates a sequence of reactions in your body that results in a slowdown in your metabolic rate. A high metabolism burns a lot of calories in a short time. A low metabolism burns fewer calories, and stores the rest as body fat. The end result is that your blood sugar gets converted into fat cells.
Processed sugar–what you find in cakes, cookies, candy, etc.—builds belly fat. This type of food is an entire category of food: sweets. The sugar found in sweets rushes into your bloodstream like a storm.
Fighting belly fat requires a change in your eating habits. Adding exercise to your daily routine will also help. Surprisingly, there are certain foods that actually help you burn belly fat. There are also things you can do to speed up a slow metabolism. These are subjects for future articles.
