Dieting has never been easy. With essentially tens of thousands of different diets available to choose from, having an idea of which one to pick is a tough chore.

One diet that is getting a lot of attention recently is the low GI diet, or slow carb diet. The slow carb diet is not a low carb diet in the traditional sense. Still it can be confusing to those new to the diet.

So what’s a low GI or slow carb diet?

First , we must define what low Glycemic carbs are. Low GI, or low glycemic index foods, release energy slowly over time, thus keeping our sugar levels from spiking.By being absorbed slower over time, slow carbs deter hunger making it easier to keep weight off.

Fast carbs, or high GI carbs and foods, can cause hardship on the body by spiking blood sugar levels too quickly, thus stressing the body to try and reduce the levels back to normal. This stress on the body can also affect our energy levels, making us hungrier and more vulnerable to gaining weight.

By using the Glycemic Index to help determine foods with a good GI rating, we can choose to eat slow carbs and maintain a healthy weight. It’s an easy decision, choose food with a lower GI rating. Lots of really great tasting foods are low in the GI, including rye bread, legumes, certain pastas and even many fruits.These diets may even help reduce the risk factors for heart disease, certain cancers and even diabetes. Another obviously healthy benefit is the ability to maintain a healthy weight by helping reduce food cravings caused by sugar spikes.

Many people find this diet easy to stick to because of the variety and quality of the foods you are allowed to eat. Low GI foods are usually very filling. Also a low GI diet is typically not more expensive or specialized than mot peoples normal dietary habits. Finding Low GI meals at restaurants is usually not very difficult. A special request here and there can easily keep you on your diet and on your way to health and fitness.
