4 Acai Berry Qualities That Make It a Nearly Perfect Food

Acai is a berry, a fruit that is harvested in the rainforests of Brazil.  These days there has been a lot of hype over it.  Is it really a superfood?

Acai Berries 4 Acai Berry Qualities That Make It a Nearly Perfect FoodIn my opinion, I would say, “yes!”  At least, it is compared to just about any other single food.  This one berry contains quite a few impressive qualities.  Consider the following:

  • Berries, like fruit in general, are high in dietary fiber. The body needs fiber to make roughage, which helps move solid waste along its way through the intestines.
  • They are high in antioxidants. Oxidation is a normal process that takes place on a molecular level.  Oxidation reactions that take place in the body can produce free radicals as an undesirable byproduct.  Free radicals in the body start a chain of reactions that end up harming cells.  Antioxidants help the body’s cells by disrupting some of the “links” in this chain of destructive reactions.  Acai berries have 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes, and twice the amount found in blueberries.
  • They contain protein. Protein is a complex molecule composed of molecular building blocks called, amino acids.”  There are 21 of these “building blocks,” or “amino acids”.  The human body can assemble 14 of the 21 amino acids from various food sources.  But the other 7 must be consumed directly, from sources like beef and chicken.  There are some vegetables that have these missing amino acids, but it is very rare to find a food like the Acai berry that contains all but two of these. 

  • They contain Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids. These are “good” fatty acids.  Not only are they good for your heart, but they also lower the bad cholesterol level in your blood.

Acai berries are a good weight loss supplement. Eating a complete food like the Acai berry allows you to eat less food, while giving your body much of the nutrition it needs. There are diets, these days, that are referred to as, “acai diets”.  I read a good blog that gave a good, balanced view of it.
